1968 Presidential Market Turmoil

In 1968 the country was in a mess:

  • North Korea captured the USS Pueblo
  • North Vietnam launched the Tet Offensive
  • A sniper assassinated civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr
  • Civil Rights riots erupted across the country
  • Democrat presidential candidate and Attorney General Robert Kennedy was assassinated
  • Antiwar protests turned violent at the Democrat Presidential Convention
  • At the Summer Olympics two black athletes staged a silent demonstration against racial discrimination in the US
  • The year ended on a positive note when Apollo 8 was the first manned spacecraft to orbit the moon.

The stock market was just as turbulent.  Following Nixon’s presidential victory in November, the S&P500 briefly rallied to an all-time record high; but one year later it plunged over 30%.

This year’s presidential season has no less drama…invest with caution.
